Dr. Michael Okun
Michael Okun, MD, is a board-certified neurologist, movement disorders specialist, neuroscientist, and author who practices with a patient-centered philosophy that places individuals at the heart of all care decisions. He is the co-founder and co-director of the internationally recognized Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases, alongside neurosurgeon Kelly Foote, MD. Dr. Okun has also served the Parkinson’s Foundation since 2006, most recently as its Medical Advisor.
Dr. Okun earned his medical degree from the University of Florida, where he also completed his internship and neurology residency. He completed fellowship training in movement disorders and movement disorder surgery at Emory University. His clinical practice focuses on movement-related neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, Tourette syndrome, dystonia, tremor, and related disorders.
In addition to patient care, Dr. Okun leads extensive human research, including clinical trials and studies on deep brain stimulation and neuromodulation. His research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health and numerous national foundations. He has authored over 600 peer-reviewed publications and 14 books addressing neurological disease and quality of life, and he is a strong advocate for the integration of the arts into medicine.
Outside of work, Dr. Okun enjoys time with family and friends, reading history, podcasts, walking his dog, and watching baseball.
