Open Letter To the Media
While it may be convenient for the media to attribute misspoken sentiments, errant behavior, and poorly-delivered speeches to “Tourette Syndrome,” it is both inaccurate and cruel. As many as 1 in 100 school-aged children are affected by Tourette Syndrome and Tic Disorders, as well as thousands of adults. Careless and misinformed references to this incurable neurological disorder serve only to perpetuate stigma, spread misinformation, and cause pain.
The Tourette Association of America is dedicated to raising awareness, fostering social acceptance, advancing research, and providing support for all people affected by Tourette Syndrome and other Tic Disorders. But our work – and the lives of those with Tourette and Tics – is much harder when the media makes Tourette a punchline. It’s time to reverse the stigma.
As a vehicle with great influence, wide reach, and the responsibility to report accurately, we invite you to become part of the solution by joining our campaign to stop the stigma and debunk the myths. You can do this by correcting misinformation, sharing the facts, and participating in our social media efforts by using the hashtag #TouretteStigma.
