An Adult’s Perspective on Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT)
“I’m a 37-year-old with TS who finished CBIT in February. It completely changed my life and I want to share my experience with the TS community!
I was diagnosed at 18 with severe Tourette’s. I just completed eight months of CBIT therapy in Washington state with Dr. Geoffrey Wiegand, and it vastly improved my life. I went through CBIT in hopes I could come off my medication since my husband and I are trying for our first child. I’m happy to share that I’m down to less than half of my medications, but beyond that, this therapy did much more for me. I went from a case of “severe” TS to decreasing my tics by 80%. Most people wouldn’t even know I have this disorder. Like most things in life, if you put the time, effort and dedication into something, you’ll see results. CBIT wasn’t easy, but every minute, hour, week and month I spent reading, doing exercises and more, and with the support of my doctor, husband and family, it was worth it! I am now living a life I never thought was possible and want others to know it can work!
In the last year I spoke on a panel with others with disabilities at the Starbucks Corporate office, where I’ve been a partner for almost 16 years. Most recently I spoke at Bastyr College to share my story of coping with TS and OCD, and how CBIT worked for me.”
