TAA Medical Grand Rounds Video Series

Participants will learn from experts in the field and walk away with knowledge and skillsets to better understand and treat their patients with Tourette Syndrome or Tic Disorders. For any questions or concerns, please contact programs@tourette.org.

TARGET AUDIENCE: Physicians, Registered Nurses, Advanced Practice Nurses, Physician Assistants, Occupational therapists, Psychiatrists, Psychologists

PREREQUISITES: The target audience should be well-versed in foundational medical skills (diagnostic methods, common assessment modalities, building rapport with patients, etc.). Target audience should also have a basic understanding of diagnostic reference material (e.g., ICD-10, DSM-5).

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This activity is designed to increase knowledge and change competency of diagnostic criteria for Tourette Syndrome and other Tic Disorders, as well as a means for assimilating these criteria into the audience’s existing patient interview/assessment process. In addition, the presentation provides a basic overview of the various management/treatment strategies used among patients presenting with tics, as well as items or issues of concern to look for related to commonly co-occurring conditions among this population.

OBJECTIVES:

At the conclusion of the session, the participant should be able to:

  1. Identify criteria used to diagnose Tourette Syndrome and other Tic Disorders
  2. Discuss the potential health disparities in individuals with Tourette Syndrome and other Chronic Tic Disorders
  3. Discuss the strategies that the healthcare team can use to optimize the educator-healthcare team provider relationship.
  4. Identify effective management strategies for patients with tics.
  5. Identify effective treatment strategies for patients with tics.
  6. Identify the common co-occurring conditions seen in patients with Tourette Syndrome and other Tic Disorders

Diagnosis and Treatment of Tourette Syndrome and other Tic Disorders

TAA Medical Grand Rounds - Coprophenomena

The learning activity will provide educators with information on coprophenomena, examples of impairment specific to coprophenomena and strategies to accommodate these symptoms in a classroom/workplace environment. Panelists will include people who have personal experience with coprolalia or copropraxia and can share their lessons learned, and specialists from psychology, psychiatry, occupational therapy, and neurology backgrounds that can help address options for improving life with this symptom. Resources specific to addressing and managing coprophenomena will also be shared.

OBJECTIVES:

At the conclusion of the session, the participant should be able to:

1. Discuss the potential health disparities in individuals with Tourette Syndrome and other Chronic Tic Disorders
2. Discuss the strategies that the healthcare team can use to optimize the educator-healthcare team provider relationship.
3. Identify effective management strategies for patients with tics.

TAA Introduction to Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) Workshop

In partnership with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the TAA is pleased to offer free CMEs and CEUs for medical providers and allied health professionals to learn more about Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT). This no cost workshop provides an overview of TS and associated conditions and an introduction to the CBIT protocol and supportive research. Participants will learn from an expert in the field and walk away with knowledge and skillsets to better understand CBIT when working with their patients with Tourette Syndrome or Tic Disorders. The “TAA Introduction to Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) Workshop” video can be accessed by meeting eligibility and completing the form below under the “Registration” tab. 

Through this overview program, we do not formally offer certification to do CBIT. After attending this program we recommend participating in the Behavior Therapy Institute for intensive training in CBIT. See next section.

PREREQUISITES: Target audience should be a licensed (or license-eligible) healthcare practitioner who currently works with – or anticipates working with – clients/patients who have a Tic Disorder. Base knowledge and skill prerequisites include an understanding of child/adolescent development, familiarity with best practices in symptom assessment, and exposure to basic principles of research design/statistical analysis. 

Requirements: Upon registration, participants are required to sign a Participant Memorandum of Understanding (PMU) and submit a copy of their license/certification.
